Blue Deer Cabin: Claryville, NY
About The Property
Amongst the ferns and forest of the Catskill Mountains sits this authentic 1934 log cabin, which was lovingly renovated over more than a dozen years by the previous owners. Beyond the lush lawn behind the house is nearly 23 acres of forest, which borders the tumbling headwaters of the Neversink River.
Not far off a sleepy mountain road, tantalizing glimpses of the cabin may be had from the stone path bordered by mosses and mature trees that leads to the house. A pine paneled mud room with pegs and storage built into the benches provides a handy buffer before entering into the “L”-shaped kitchen. There is a breakfast counter, loads of storage in pine-paneled cupboards, and a stackable washer/dryer is tucked into a closet.
The comfortable interior includes two bedrooms (one upstairs and one on main floor, which accommodate queen size beds) and one roomy full bath, with double sink and a tub/shower. The cathedral ceilinged living room, which has a wonderful river rock fireplace with insert, tall windows and sliding glass doors leading out to the covered deck. There is plenty of room for the dining table in this room, under the skylights. The large timbers further the “mountain cabin vibe” while the horizontal rows of “chinking” and logs create a classic cabin setting.
There are two propane-fueled forced hot air heating sources, one in-floor heater in the living room, and the second furnace is in the downstairs bedroom closet. It heats through conventional floor registers. The mudroom, bathroom and utility room were added to the house in 1985.
Outside, the younger set will appreciate the fun swing set with slide and other climbing features, while everyone is drawn to hanging out on the deep covered back porch. The stone fire pit is just out back and there are a million spots to hang your hammock. The woods are expansive and dynamic, with level areas, rock outcroppings, ravines that lead steeply down to streams and watercourses that feed into the Neversink River below. The river is incredibly scenic and changes with the seasons, the rains and the years (no flooding risk, however). Spritely native brook trout populate the river, and eagles live in the neighborhood.
There is a detached two bay garage with a very rudimentary upstairs room with a window and electricity.
There is a world of hiking opportunities both on the property and in the general area, and a local swimming hole less than 5 miles away is a prized town amenity.
Blue Deer Cabin has been a successful Red Cottage Inc. vacation rental.
