Mill House: Callicoon Center NY

About The Property

With the main portion of this picturesque house dating back to 1860, it originally served as housing for workers at the local cider and grist mill. The house evolved over the decades, with additions that provide welcome bonus spaces for offices or playrooms. Mill House sits at the edges of the somewhat sleepy hamlet of Callicoon Center, while featuring outdoor spaces and amenities that offer a truly country house experience.

An old two story barn has been given love in recent years and now it’s a blank canvas for a studio or other creative uses (not to mention handy storage in the lower level). A mature stand of lilacs and other perennial plantings enhance the experience as you walk along a pretty path to the back door. There is a pergola-covered deck, and it serves as a go-to spot during warmer weather, from morning coffee to late-night gatherings. The fire pit nearby makes this private space appealing and usable throughout the year.

A spacious mud room with pellet stove provides substantial storage opportunities, and also a toasty arrival to the house. The kitchen features an island with open shelving, perfect for cookbooks, wine and small appliances. Check out those gorgeous wide plank floors, original to the house. One of two entrances to the downstairs full bathroom (tub/shower) is from the kitchen.

The character of the house really comes through in the dining room, with its nearly floor to ceiling windows, mantel over an old fireplace (no longer in use), those gorgeous floors, wainscoting and the wonderful bannister that leads to the upstairs rooms. A large office (or bedroom/library/den) off the dining room also has one of these dramatic large windows and then connects to that full bathroom

In the other direction, an archway leads into the large living room, which was once two rooms, opened into one. The further section has a corner wood burning fireplace and five windows throughout means the space enjoys enviable natural light.

Upstairs the large master “suite” incorporates a large bedroom, followed by a room that has alternately served as a nursery, playroom and office, leading then to the master bathroom. The bedroom has painted plank flooring and slightly sloped ceilings, and the spacious bathroom features a clawfoot tub/shower. A smallish door from the bathroom leads to an open loft space that is above the mudroom. It is currently not used.

There are two additional light and airy bedrooms on the other side of the stairwell, and they share a modern half bathroom.

The owners have created a vegetable garden with raised beds that receive plenty of sunshine. And if you’re part-timers, do not fear! There is an automated drip irrigation system.

The location of this delightful property is wonderfully handy to some of the most talked-about offerings in the area. The Callicoon Farmers’ Market is arguably the best in the county, and the newly reopened Callicoon Hills means a great drink and dinner is within walking distance. And because I’m obsessed, the Jeffersonville Bake Shop is just 8 minutes away.
