Named after a narrowing of the Delaware River where two cliffs squeeze the river and form a deep eddy, Narrowsburg is a dynamic riverside town with an active business and arts community. Whether you're a local, first-time or repeat visitor, there's always something new to discover, from eateries with enchanting waterfront views, to fun shops that will tickle your retail urges. Here's a guide to some of this Sullivan County town's must-visit spots and hidden gems.

FOOD + DRINk scene

If you're feeling peckish or just want to seek out the area buzz, you have plenty of options in Narrowsburg. The Heron is a popular farm-to-table restaurant that prides itself on using locally-sourced ingredients to create mouth-watering dishes. Brunch is a perennial favorite. If you're craving Italian food, head to The Laundrette, a casual spot known for their wood-fired pizzas, homemade pasta, cocktails and riverfront patio. For a quick bite, grab a tasty sandwich or pastry, and a great cup o’ joe at Tusten Cup, a café also with an appealing outdoor seating area.

La Cigogne (opened fall 2024) occupies a large lower level space in the multi-floor Shops at Narrowsburg, and serves up terrific French bistro fare, while offering picturesque views of the Delaware River.

Prefer cooking yourself? There is a Saturday farmers’ market from late May through October at the Narrowsburg Union. Level up your home bar offerings at Narrowsburg Fine Wines & Spirits, where the friendly staff can guide you to the perfect bottle for your next gathering or quiet evening in.

Narrowsburg Proper is a not so general, general store, featuring a wide range of gourmet delectables: cocktail bitters, pasta, olives, cheese, cured meats, and was voted the Best Craft Beer shop three years in a row. Narrowsburg Proper To Go is a sister location of the aforementioned, showcasing their prepared meals. A popular destination café and roaster, 2 Queens Coffee has created a joyful and colorful space, also within the The Shops at Narrowsburg building, and expanded its coffee, bakery and lunch offerings. Their sought-after beans are sold throughout the area. 

While many eateries pare down their schedule in winter, the Blue Fox Motel has a restaurant that is open 7 days a week. Big Eddy Brewing Co. is Narrowsburg’s first Craft brewery. Offering traditional craft beer varieties as well as New York made seltzers, ciders, wines and more. They have cleverly partnered with Smokd, serving authentic BBQ by area top chef JP Medina.

RETAIL THERAPY

In Narrowsburg, every storefront tells a story, and every stroll down Main Street feels like a journey through a treasure trove of delights.

Perhaps the biggest addition to the town is The Shops at Narrowsburg which opened in July 2024. A reimagining of the former Rasmussen & Sons furniture store, a cavernous, multi-story building at 90 Main St., it is now home to numerous shops and eateries. Among them is fan favorite, the Velvet Maple, which offers one-of-a-kind gifts, thoughtfully curated interiors and stylish clothing. Norman & Jules is a beautifully-presented boutique toy store (and more) featuring high quality toys to encourage imaginative play.

For an eclectic collection of handmade jewelry, home accessories and clothing, Madame Fortuna stands as a gem among the town's vibrant collection of boutiques. You’ll want to linger at One Grand Books, a welcoming shop with a curated collection of titles. Immerse yourself in the curated wisdom of celebrated thinkers and creatives. Explore the shelves lined with the ten books they'd choose for their metaphorical desert island, each selection a window into the soul of its curator, waiting to inspire and enlighten.

Step into River Gallery, for luxe home. Here, amidst a captivating collection of artwork, antiques, and textiles, you'll find yourself lingering over high end home accessories and luxurious furnishings that beckon you to imagine them in your own abode.

WHAT TO DO AND SEE

No visit to Narrowsburg would be complete without exploring the great outdoors. Take a walk along the Delaware River and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. For a more adventurous experience, rent a kayak, canoe or inner tube from Lander's River Trips and spend the day exploring the river. If you prefer to stay on land, there are plenty of hiking trails in the area, including the Tusten Mountain Trail and the Mongaup Valley Wildlife Management Area.

Be sure to check out some of Narrowsburg's cultural attractions. The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance is an anchor within the town, hosting a variety of events and exhibits throughout the year, including live music performances and art shows.

For Fort Delaware Museum offers an authentic depiction of the life of the Delaware Company Pioneers who settled in the Upper Delaware Valley in 1754. A tour of the facilities includes demonstrations of early settlers' lifestyles and craft-making.

For something a little more present day, a gym and wellness space for adults and children, The Chi Hive has an array of classes, both group and one-on-one, and events focusing on mind and body.

Skinner's Falls is a popular scenic and swimming spot just outside Narrowsburg along the Delaware. The rocky terrain and cascading waters of the falls have created natural pools and shallow areas that are ideal for a dip and lounging during the warmer months.

Events

Riverfest, a 30+ year tradition along the Delaware River, merges art, music, and ecology. Organized by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, it features unique artisan vendors, live music, a benefit poster auction, and family-friendly activities, creating a vibrant community celebration.

The Big Eddy Film Festival is also produced by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, and offers a cinematic celebration of counter-current narratives and showcases the newest independent films globally and locally, drawing filmmakers and enthusiasts to the picturesque Catskill Mountains each fall for a unique blend of art, film, and rural imagination.

Honeybee Fest is an annual festival, usually in September, dedicated to raising awareness about the decline in honey bee populations. This unique event serves as a platform to highlight the importance of honey bees in our ecosystem while providing a really fun day out. There is food, music and plenty of costumes that bring the theme to life.
